Value betting: spotting prices that are too high
A value bet is a bet whose odds are higher than they should be given the true probability. Only these bets are profitable in the long run – even though any single one can lose.
The principle
A coin has a 50% chance of landing heads, so the fair price is 2.00. If someone offers you 2.20, take it: over 100 flips you come out ahead. Value betting works the same way – you just have to estimate the probability.
Four steps
- Estimate your probability using form, xG and team news.
- Work out the bookmaker’s: 1 ÷ odds. Odds of 2.50 = 40%.
- Compare: if you estimate 45%, the value is 12.5% (0.45 × 2.50 − 1).
- Leave a safety margin: only bet from 3–5% value upwards.
Where to find value
- Less-followed leagues (League One, League Two, Scandinavian leagues).
- Secondary markets: corners, cards, goalscorers.
- Right after news breaks (injuries, line-ups) that not every bookmaker reacts to straight away.
Bankroll management
Set a dedicated budget and stake 1–2% per bet. Even with value, losing runs of 8–10 bets happen – sensible stakes let you ride them out.

FAQ
How do I know if a bet has value?
Expected value = (your probability × odds) − 1. If the result is positive, the bet has value. Example: 50% × 2.20 − 1 = +0.10.
Does a value bet always win?
No. The edge only shows over a large number of bets.
How much should I stake per bet?
For most bettors, 1–2% of their bankroll per bet.
